Our After-School Program

6-week Program

Dance PossAbilities offers dance classes in collaboration with different school boards to create more opportunities and increase recruitment of children and youth with disabilities (Grades 1-12) for existing dance studio environments. Because there is such little current representation on stage and screen, we want to show our students that they can also live a life enriched with dance. Whether it is for recreational purposes or to pursue dance as a career path, we want those opportunities to be available.  Our ultimate mission is to provide a fun and safe environment while creating more opportunities for children and youth with and without disabilities to be together in one space.

Our after-school program is an hour and 30 minutes long, twice a week for a duration of 6 weeks for a total of 12 classes. Each class will have 3 co-facilitators who have been trained to support and tailor the curriculum to meet students' needs. Through the support of our spectacular team, each dancer will discover their true capabilities.

In every 6 week program, students will learn a range of exercises, dance drills, choreography, and lessons on inclusion. Every week students will slowly work towards learning a dance routine tailored specifically to their group. This routine will be professionally filmed at the end of their program. Students will experience the joys of seeing themselves in a professionally filmed and produced dance video.

Over the course of 6 weeks, dancers will build friendships, develop confidence, improve their physical literacy skills, learn about inclusion and the importance of community.

Our Dance Class Understanding Diversity Understanding Inclusion Exploring Values vs. Actions Our Dance Class: Review Our Dance Class: Next Steps

Our lessons on inclusion support children in learning about diversity and equity, by providing activities to explore their own values. In order to promote the development of an inclusive dance community, students will need to work with everyone else in their class to get to know and understand them better.

This program is designed to guide students through the start of a journey towards including other students with different abilities in learning and life at school. A key point to remember about this journey is that it does not have a final destination. Rather, it is about cumulative change that has, at its heart, a continuous focus on improving their access to participation in quality, inclusive education, but through dance!

After-school snacks will also be provided by Wholesome Kids Catering.
